About PhD Program

The Government of India established the Indian Institute of Technology Indore in Madhya Pradesh in 2009. IIT Indore has positioned itself as a vibrant centre for outstanding research. The School of Humanities & Social Sciences focuses mainly on multidisciplinary research. The school has six disciplines: Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Psychology, and Sociology. IIT Indore invites applications from highly motivated candidates for admission to the PhD program in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences as per disciplines and areas of research mentioned.

Important Note: This round is for candidates who have UGC/CSIR-NET/JRF/GATE and equivalent qualifying exams.

Guidelines for Application

  • You MUST select an appropriate research area in the discipline you are applying to. There will be a written exam and then an interview.
  • During the written exam, applicants will have to write a statement of purpose explaining reasons for pursuing doctoral research at IITI besides outlining scholarly interests.
  • The school conducts a rigorous evaluation process and reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for the written test and interview.
Important Note: No TA/DA will be provided to the applicants if called for the written test and/or interview

Eligibility

National Candidates

  • Masters’ degree in the relevant Department of Engineering/ Technology [with first division as defined below @] AND GATE qualification, OR
  • Masters’ degree in the relevant Department of Science [with first division as defined below @] AND valid GATE qualification OR valid UGC-JRF/ CSIR-JRF OR Equivalent Fellowship OR
  • Masters’ degree in relevant specialization of [with first division as defined below @] AND UGC-JRF qualification or Equivalent Fellowship, OR
  • M.Phil. degree in relevant specialization [with first division as defined below @] AND GATE qualification, OR
  • Masters’ degree in Business Administration [with first division as defined below @] AND UGC/ CSIR-JRF qualification OR Equivalent Fellowship. OR
  • MPhil degree in a relevant specialization of HSS OR Master's degree in a relevant specialization of HSS with UGC-JRF OR UGC-NET. GATE is not compulsory for DF / IS / CT / SW category

    International Candidates

  • Masters’ degree in relevant specialization of HSS [with first division as defined below @] QE:Valid TOEFL/IELTS OR equivalent qualification OR Valid GATE qualification OR
  • Masters’ degree in Science/ Engineering/ Social Sciences/ International Business [with first division as defined below @] QE: Valid TOEFL/IELTS OR equivalent qualification OR Valid GATE qualification
  • @ Marks /CGPA/ CPI/ Percentage requirements in Qualifying Degrees

      1. For UR/EWS/OBC(NCL) category:
      • A minimum of 60% marks in aggregate, OR
      • A First class as specified by the university, OR
      • A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.0 on a scale of 0 – 10, OR
      • An equivalent to 6.0 CGPA/ CPI on other corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 0 – 10.

        • 2. For SC/ST/PwD category:
        • A minimum of 55% marks in aggregate, OR
        • A First class as specified by the university, OR
        • A minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) / Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 5.5 on a scale of 0 – 10, OR
        • An equivalent to 5.5 CGPA/ CPI on other corresponding proportional requirements when the scales are other than 0 – 10.
